Have Samsung SyncMaster 191T. Broke cardinal computer rule: no drinks near computer!!! Cat knocked over glass and small amount of liquid hit bottom left hand corner of display. At first, some condensation "ripples" appeared in that area. Then some smaller ripples in UPPER left hand corner, then colored lines vertically from bottom to top of screen. Now have circular area of condensation about the size of a halfdollar in the upper left corner, one the size of a quarter in the lower left corner -- plus both sets of ripples and the vertical colored lines now covering space almost 2 inches wide.
Is there any hope for the recovery of this display or has it been permanently damaged??

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
DISCONNECT the monitor from the PC and DISCONNECT the Power Cord to the LCD.
Use a hair dryer on low heat settings to try and dissipate the moisture. Might work, might not.

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
Thanks, Tyree. I applied the blow dryer on low to each of the affected areas (top and bottom left corners) for about 8 minutes each and found myself repeatedly wondering how long I should do it. Afterwards, it seemed like the still growing circle in the upper left corner (now bigger than a silver dollar) showed a slight improvement. Then the gods that be graced me -- a free Dell 17" monitor!!. So for now, I am parking the LCD and hope that the inside heat of winter might clear things up. But what about those many thin, variously colored vertical lines in the damaged area? My gut says that is probably permanent. What do you think?
I thought designating the monitor would be sufficient, but in case it isn't, I have a Dell Precision 670 with dual Zeon processors, 79 GB Hd, 1 GB RAM, cd ROM, and what turns out to be a SATA DVD R/W internal drive that I can't seem to get hooked up right. At first, no cable came with the drive, then Dell sent a harness instead of a cable. Now I know I have the right cable to the motherboard (at least it is identical to one that goes between the hard drive and the motherboard), but no matter which piece of harnessed SATA connection I plugged in to the drive, it still doesn't show up on my desktop. Do I need to make a new thread for this? Thanks for your help!!!! |

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
Ok. I've been being a little slow on this as my focus has not been on getting the drive installed until now. I need driver -- none came with the drive. Figured I was all set and would come back here to apologize, but i googled Sony Optiarc dvd r/w drivers and their site says they will ruin a drive from on OEM. NOW what do I do?

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
No drivers are needed for an oiptical drive. It should be recognized instantly. Look in device manager for any Yellow exclamation marks.
Is the optical drive recognized in the bios? Is it IDE or SATA?

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
Thanks again. Device manager has the yellow exclamation point alright, but says it can't detect automatically other than what it already has. The drive is SATA, not IDE. Dell updated the bios remotely within the last month. I rechecked and it is version A07. What else can I try?

Re: Display Ruined or Not?
Tyree,
Thanks for keeping me on task with the DVD drive. After efforts to load drivers without any success, I figured I needed to call Dell (love that lifetime software support they offer!!!). Couldn't do it on the weekend, having a business machine. Problem was, in the cpu's built in efficiency, it turned off looking for a drive when none was there. I had to turn on making it look for the new drive by hitting F2 at Dell startup screen. Worked like magic after that. Thought someone else may benefit from this info if its put into a different thread and I don't know how to do that. Thanks so much!!! |
