Name That Part!

This isn't so much of a tech support issue as it is a test for you oldsters. If there's someplace better for this, feel free to move it.

I was going through some boxes looking for my old Starcraft CD when I found all these old computer parts. I mean, these are ancient, by computer standards. I'm not positive, but I'm guessing they're from between 1996 and 1999. Before my time, anyway.

Anyway, I wanted to see if you oldsters can "name that part," so to speak. There are four of them, and I'm posting them in increasing order of difficulty. So name the part and what it does!

Also, I guess anyone else with old or uncommon hardware pieces can post them on here. Just something I thought would be neat.

Re: Name That Part!

1996 and 1999 isnt that ancient in the grand scheme of things.
I recognized all of those components, except the last one, If I saw
the front I might get it. That modem looked like a old isa dialup modem
maybe not..Isa or pci,, looks like isa though. I got some junk laying
around here that would make you scratch your head, but dont feel
like digging around in boxes...
last one looks like some sort of lpt switch for printers or something

Re: Name That Part!

I think it's PCI... could be wrong. I'll try and find my busted wireless card and compare them.

1999 wasn't all that long ago, but at that time I was just a child figuring out how to use Windows 98 to play Starcraft and Duke Nukem, so it's the stone age from my perspective. ;)

The first one is obvious, of course, and the second one is definitely some kind of network or modem card. Can you tell the third one? It's about six inches wide and nine long.

The fourth may be even older... my mom said that one broke back in '95, and she can't even remember when she got it.

Re: Name That Part!

cd drive

pci modem

huge hard drive (or your hands are really small)

and i would guess a printer control/switch type device as those are the only connections that those could be.

Re: Name That Part!

It is a huge hard drive. It's slightly bigger than my graphics card. O.O It's 19.2GB and has a copy of Windows 95 installed on it, but when I plugged it into my computer I couldn't get it to register in BIOS, so I'm guessing either the port or the board is broken.

As for #4, it's a general purpose A/B data switcher. The ports are for some pre-VGA standard data transfer plug, and my mom supposedly used it to switch her monitor between two different computers.

Anyone else got interesting junk laying around?

We have a copy of MS DOS 2.0, as well as 4.0, but I'm not sure where.
