[SOLVED] Possible PSU issue

This morning I turned on my computer and was using it for about 20 minutes until it all of a sudden shut itself off without any warning. This isn't the first time this has happens but it usually was good again after switching the power off at the back and switching it back on again. Now when I do the same nothing happens. The reason for me thinking it is to do with the PSU is when I do switch it off it makes a weird zapping nose for a second.

If I do need to replace my PSU what type must I replace it with?

My current PSU is an Eagle ATX350W Switching Power Supply. +12V V2.03 for Pentium 4 Processors. Total output of 350w.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Re: Possible PSU issue

No problem.

Intel Pentium(R) 4 3.2GHz
1GB of ram (2x 512mb sticks)
Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family (integrated graphics)
Realtek HD audio soundcard
LG Dual layer CD/DVD drive

(not sure if those last 2 are too important)

Hello
Open one side of the case and check if it is dusted...
Clean the dust with can of compressed air. Blow the dust from CPU heat-sink.
How old is PSU???
It is possible that PSU is loosing power because it is getting old and probably it is dusted too if it is old more than 2 years.

Keep us posted.

I made sure I opened the case before posting and there was some dust in the CPU fan but that was about it. I cleaned it off and that hasn't helped.

I have had the CPU for almost 4 years I think.

Re: Possible PSU issue

Not the CPU but PSU how old is??? Or you misstyped perhaps? :D
Hmmm...
Maybe you should replace thermal paste on CPU just in case we make sure it is not overheating...
You should test with friends PSU.
Keep us posted.

yeah sorry that was a mistype.

and my computer always did get a little overheat which I should have mentioned earlier. Where abouts would I get some thermal paste from do you know?

@dai, I would buy from newegg but I don't think they take paypal.

edit: never mind they do, but do they ship to Australia?

also would a 400w psu be too much for my computer or am I better off with something like this

Re: Possible PSU issue

400W is enough, just make sure it's a good quality unit like the Corsairs in dai's links. If it's a cheap no-name PSU, then you're putting the rest of your computer at risk. It wouldn't blow up, but a weak power supply can cause the components to overheat and stop working.

Re: Possible PSU issue

having surplus power causes no problems the computer only draws the power it needs

it's underpowered that causes big and sometimes expensive problems

Re: Possible PSU issue

I brought a 450w Autrix (lowest watt psu they had) and it's running perfect if not better then it did before.

Thanks for all your help and I'll be making a donation to techsupport forum once the money goes into my paypal :)
