Try the fix here:
You can no longer access the CD/DVD drive or Code 31 or Code 37

Re: dvd drive no longer recognized

Did you try the manual steps documented here (scroll down the page): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 ?

If yes and it did not help, try booting from CD/DVD drive using a good/working bootable CD/DVD media. If BIOS cannot see the drive or if computer cannot boot from CD/DVD drive then it is possible that your CD/DVD drive is dead.

Re: dvd drive no longer recognized

well it doesn't seem the BIOS recognizes the Drive, but the problem is that it's only 6 months old it shouldn't fail after failing to format a disk

Re: dvd drive no longer recognized

Well it depends... AFAIK it should not be the case. If it is 6 months old, then it is possible that it is still under warranty. Have it replaced/repaired under warranty.

Re: dvd drive no longer recognized

What brand is the optical drive? Hardware failure can occur any time.
It should be under warranty.
