Cd-rw/dvd wont open

I know there is not a cd or dvd in there...i can pull the rom out of the computer but it wont open to let me put a cd in there. I dont know what happend. I have an ibm think pad..im sure my computer is old as bones but why all of a sudden would this happen?? Im knew to this whole lap top thing...do i need a whole new cd thing??

Laptops generally use low quality optical drives. You say it's old so it has most likely failed.
