Hi. I believe this is in the correct section, if not, I apologise.
I want to have a career in computer maintenance. I know alot about computers I believe. I know intermediate C++ and Visual Basic. Have decent experience with alot of office programs. And have decent knowledge of hardware, just not as much as I would like to know. How can I become a.. Lets say.. 'Tech King'? I want to learn everything there is to know about hardware. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much, Sam |

Re: Where can I learn everything there is to know about hardware?
Hi Sam,
There are many tech schools and community colleges out there that offer this type program. However, you can get to know about as much as you need by simply working part time in a computer shop while you learn the ropes. Some place that services and sells computers might be a good place to start. Even hanging out in a forum like this and monitoring the hardware techs at work can give you quite a bit of knowledge about how things work and why they don't at times. Good luck on your search for a career in this field.

As Tumbleweed36 pointed out most all colleges, and "some" Tech schools, offer some sort of viable PC related training.
Hands on experience is always the best teacher.

Re: Where can I learn everything there is to know about hardware?
Tumbleweed and Tyree, thank you for the kind replies.
As for getting a job part time in a place that services and sells computers, I am only 16 and just left school. Do you think they would accept me? I have a C.V up and ready which I created about 2 weeks ago. Where do you think would actually SERVICE computers? I live in England. Any major brands which you think would accept me? Would an internet cafe actually SERVICE the computers? If so theres ALOT around my area. I appreciate the advice! |

Re: Where can I learn everything there is to know about hardware?
Hello mate...
I am working in computer shop, repairing PCs and I must admit that Tumbleweed is 100% right: you will learn about hardware while you repairing them :D Now, if you do not go for money [but we all go right hehe], you can go and ask them to work as an apprentice or something similar. Would be great if you know someone who is working in computer shop who can let you in to watch and learn... When you build your first PC, or when you make a broken PC good, as well as when you learn how to test hardware components for malfunction, you will be on the right path :D Internet cafe is, well, Internet cafe. :D They already have a tech support guy who maintains their PCs. If you know the owner or workers, you could try to get in and help this tech guy... If Internet Cafe has, lets say, 50 PCs, there will always be something for you to work and repair :D |

Re: Where can I learn everything there is to know about hardware?
Good Advice already given
I learnt by building my own, upgrading, making a new PC and giving the old ones to my Kids (great way to see if they are indestructible). Find someone in your neighbourhood who does Computer Repairs and ask if you can help .. Sa****ay Job, Evenings, Holidays etc. Don't expect too much too quick .. he may well like the idea that you can place them on a bench to prepare them for testing while he does other work. Basically if he has a lot of work you'll help him to improve his efficiency. Prove your worth and maybe he'll ask you to start up the PC and report back your findings. But first you will have to earn his trust. Not easy at your age. Take an active part in this forum and give good advice. Read the questions carefully & Research your answers before you give them. Don't try to be the first with the answer try to be the one that gives a Good helpful answer even if it doesn't cure the problem at hand. You'll slowly learn and be able to prove to a Tech outside on the street that you know what you talk about. When you have a years good advice on this site you can use it in your CV to impress a possible employer, coupled with your other accomplishments. Helped me get the job I am in now, I am sure.
