computer turns off issue

I have an issue where my computer turns off all of a sudden when im in a game. It only happens about 3 minutes in and it just shuts off. There is a click in the audible click in the power supply but it may be caused by the sudden lack of current draw or something. I have monitered the temperatures which are stable.
The voltages are normal except the 12 volt which is around 12.2-12.25, also the -12 volt is only at -7.35? These voltage readings have stayed at these values since i built the computer and they were these values before this issue started occuring.

I'm running windows xp with antec 500w psu, with mcp6p m2+ mobo, amd x2 6000 cpu, 6800 gpu, gig and 2 hd's.

thanks for any help!

Re: computer turns off issue

The click sounds like a power supply shutting down either because of overload or overheating, is the power supply fan running? Does air coming out feel very warm right before it happens?

Re: computer turns off issue

The power supply goes up in temperature barely if any. It is definitely not overheating. I have a hard time believeing that the psu is not big enough as it has 2-12 volt rails at 18Amps each and 30Amps at 5Volts. The graphics card is only a measly 6800 GT, not a high end card these days by any means. The psu being faulty is my only guess, and considering I got it from circuit city before they closed im sol.

thanks for the help.

Re: computer turns off issue

The 30 amps on the 5v hints to it's design age as being older PCIe systems need higher amperage on the 12v then the 5v total wattage size your good I just think it's a Bad PSU what brand and model is it there should be a manufacturers warranty on it.

Re: computer turns off issue

Wow, so i got a hold of another psu from a friend. It isn't the best psu but it experiences the same problem so i doubt it is the psu now. This newer psu has 30A on the 5V and 25A on the 12V.

So now I'm guess it is the graphics card. Considering that it works fine on everything else like movies, desktop etc, would it be gpu ram or something?

thanks

Re: computer turns off issue

Check the CPU temp the click is telling you something is shutting it down ram would cause freezes , video card would artifact and go blank but the PC would remain running.
Try core temp> http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Re: computer turns off issue

25a on the 12v rail is not enough for pcie you need to try one with around 40a listed on the 12v rail

Re: computer turns off issue

40Amps! How can it be that I was running it on one of the 12 volt rails at 18 amps for half a year without a hiccup?
