Hello all. I'm new to the forums so don't kick me if I'm posting this in the wrong section. All the other areas seem serious issue oriented, meanwhile this one is seeking opinions.
I'm looking to buy a 1920x1080 resolution monitor with HDMI capability and a size of either 23" or 24". Something quite important to me is the vertical length of the monitor. While Widescreens are cool, I like to have my monitor be tall as well. Adjustment wise I really don't care. If I can turn a little that's great, but really don't care much as long as it stands up without a problem. I'd like it to be 2ms. I've been searching Newegg.com for good deals but those deals seem to have run away since 3 weeks ago. Either way, when I do find the right deal, I'm going to be sure to buy one. HERE'S MY QUESTION! Based on everything I just mentioned. What would be the best brand monitor to buy? LG or Samsung? I've stuck with Samsung for HDTV's and they're awesome. Really bright and colorful like nothing else I've seen so far..but as far as monitors go, I'm not really sure. Are LGs better or Samsungs in terms of picture quality, sharpness, color and brightness? What about Asus and Acers? How are those? If you had to choose one, which would you buy? Feel free to post links to monitors you think would be a good find for me if you care to :P~ 230 is my max price range but of course I'd like it to be cheaper. |

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
Hi Simca and welcome to TSF,
The monitor you have described is very common among some of the best companies that make LCDs. I have personally gone with Samsung as they have good quality monitors for a decent price. I picked mine up for $350 (AUS) it has a 5ms response time but the Contrast Ratio (8000:1) makes up for it which gives it superior image quality over most other monitors within its price range. However to save you some money you physically can not tell the difference between a LCD that has a 2ms response and a LCD that has a 3ms response (due to the fact that the signals sent from our eyes to the part of the brain takes 3ms). Even then you wont tell the difference between 2 and 5 ms unless your a serious CS:S player in competitions and have adrenaline running though your body 24/7. So look for an LCD that has a 3ms response time and a good contrast ratio like 8000:1 or better, you will save yourself $80-$120 on looking for the right monitor.

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
ASUS VH236H Black 23" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 20000 :1 (ASCR) Built in Speakers
$200 *Free Shipping http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236059 That is what I would get for a 23" screen. 20,000:1 contrast ratio 2ms response time resolution: 1920 x 1080 A very, very nice monitor indeed. |

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
Hey, guys. Thanks for all the responses. I was reading about the response time and figured that was the case. For some odd reason I'm able to find more 2ms monitors than 3 though.
I went and looked at monitors in person and they all vary in size so much its hard to tell what size I really want. I saw a 24" Dell that was huuuuuuuuge and then I saw a 23" Acer that was tiny, then I found a large Samsung 23" so it's annoying..I guess I would just look for dimensions under the description of the monitor.. That brings me to two new question I have on the monitor. 1) Are the dimension given of the monitor itself(edges included) or just the visual screen size(part you view) and 2) I see monitors with a million different types of contrast ratios. There's Dynamic, ASCR, ACM. Is there a simple way to convert each of these into Dynamic Contrast ratio. I see some monitors with 50,000:1 I'm sure that's great and all but does that mean it's like 2500:1 DC or what?

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
1) Its the dimensions of the visual part of the screen.
2) Each types of Contrast Ratio has pros and cons its up to you to find one that suits you, go have a look at each monitor. ASCR is a feature that allows the Dynamic Contrast Ratio to change depending on whats displayed on the sceen. It allows for better colour image quality. The only thing i can find on ACM is Association for Computing Machinery, i guess its where the parts are made. Also 2500:1 DC, the DC stands for Dynamic Contrast.

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
5ms or lower and 1000:1 or higher contrast is good.
I use Samsungs because of their excellent quality and support.

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
All riiight... now.. what would be a better buy out of the following monitors.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005125 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236049 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236052 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001314 Price would be at the bottom of the pros list. I'm talking about visual screen size, brightness and color, game performance Overall quality of each of the monitors. I like the size of 24" but coming across a good price is hard. I don't know what Asus monitors really look like to give them a fair deal so my decision rests on your hands! (I'll wait another 2 weeks to see if any good deals pop up for monitors then I'll just buy one)

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
They are mostly the same and will look great for gaming. The main things to look fro is the the contrast ratio (LG wins at that in your list) and the price.
The LG is going to look really crisp. Whats your current monitor by the way? |

Re: LG vs Samsung or Other Competitors
Haha, my monitor was all right for it's day, but it's way way waaaaay outdated now.
It's a Dell 19" 1905FP 20MS LCD monitor. (not widescreen) Max resolution 1280x1024. It was nice, but I always felt like I was missing out on a lot of monitor. By the way, I don't really plan on selling the monitor (doubt anyone would really want it for a decent price nowadays).. so is there a way I could dual screen with both monitors at different resolutions or am I dreaming lol. Would have wanted it so that 1 monitor could be used for some tasks while the other for other tasks (one game full screen while the other watches my desktop to see if I have any instant messages or my old monitor playing certain 4:3 games while my new monitor does something else. btw, I was leaning towards the LG from the beginning, but wasn't sure. Wanted to see if anyone might give Asus a bump so I could go for that 24" or something, guess not!
