Pulling my hair out here!
I would be grateful if somebody could help me here....
I have an old Advent 7062 Laptop, Model No. MID2030, Notebook PC (8599), Serial No. PNB410011316. The PC is running XP Media Centre Edition 2002 with SP3 installed. All updates have been installed from the MS Website. Whever the laptop is switched off and rebooted, the sound stops working. If it is restarted, it 99% of the time works again, however on the odd occasion its also not worked on a restart. However, i've noticed that if i enter Device Manager and disable/enable the sound card, it starts working..... I have reformatted the hard drive, and reinstalled windows, i've also reinstalled all the drivers from here:- http://www.w00tw00t.co.uk/support/vi...php?f=1&t=5290 The laptop only works off of the charger as the battery is knackered, would this effect it? Here is the spec:- CPU Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz (Hyperthreading) Chipset SiS 661 Memory 256MB 184-pin PC3200 DDR SDRAM (2 memory slots. Max 2GB) Hard Drive 40 GB IBM IC25N040ATMR04-0 CD Drive HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N Screen 15" TFT Video Card SiS 661FX Sound Card Vinyl AC97 audio (WDM) Modem Agere Systems AC'97 modem Network Card SiS 900 integrated fast ethernet PC Card 1x Type I/II Ports 1x PC Card 1x Headphone 1x Microphone 6x USB 2.0 1x LAN 1x Modem 1x VGA 1x S-Video Touchpad Synaptics Touchpad Battery either a BP-8599 (14.8v 4000mAh) or a BP-8X99 (14.8v 4400mAh) Power Supply ADP-120SB Made By Medion MID2030 (MD95090) Mitac 8599 |

Re: Pulling my hair out here!
Not sure if this will help. But is your internal battery working, or do you keep the laptop connected to power all the time? My old laptop will loose the ability to boot up correctly when i first plug it in. It works fine after a restart. I'm not sure if the internal battery is the problem but I know mine is dead.
Hope you get it sorted! |

Re: Pulling my hair out here!
I've checked the clock this morning on the taskbar and its keeping its time, so i assume the battery is working.
However, i've noticed the following:- If i turn the PC off for a couple of minutes or overnight, the next time i turn it on the sound doesn't load and the device is shown with the yellow explanation mark in device manager and i have to disable and enable to get it working. I can also restart the machine, which then loads the driver correctly. So, to summarise:- If i turn the PC off the sound doesn't work when turned back on. If i restart the PC the sound works fine when it reboots. If i turn the PC off overnight and then on in the morning, the sound won't work until the pc is restarted, even though its just booted up from being switched off..... What has the restart got to do with it?????? |

Re: Pulling my hair out here!
Well, I did some searching and found that there are others with your sound card that have been having the same problems, the sites dont have any fixes however. It sounds like a driver issue, but I can't be completely sure.
Did the sound card function properly before the XP upgrade? You may also want to try looking for other drivers of your sound card at: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2 Also, I don't know how easy it would be to find, but you could try a USB sound card. If it worked, at least you would know if it was the sound card or the computer. I'll try to think of other solutions
