Are my pics and movies gone?? please help

i have a hard drive that i took from inside my old computer. i bought a case for it because it had and old hook up, (I call it compact flash style pins and holes VS the newer SD style drives)
any way it has been working fine. then all of a sudden... if it is on and i shut down the computer it stops in the middle of shutting down if i turn the usb off then the computer shuts down. same idea when i start it up. I cant start the computer with the drive turned on.

when i do turn it on. It recognizes a new device disk drive and called it something weird like a%^&^%$$$%%$FRGG%^& . it doesnt show up in my computer.. it used to show up as drive J: right next to my main drive C:.

I am not great at this kind of thing but please help me i have lots of photos on there.

oh if this helps there is no sound coming from the external i thought there was before. maybe
