Old-ish monitor only works in two resolution settings

It's an older IBM flat screen, Type 9516-B23. In any resolution setting other than 1240x1028, it basically letterboxes the screen. I've tried a number of things, nothing seems to work. The major issue is that it makes playing some games that don't have that specific resolution a pain in the neck.

What graphics card are you using? Have you tried reinstalling the graphics driver?

I have an Nvidia 9800GT video card, but this problem is not exclusive to this card, I had the same problem with the onboard video (Geforce 7700 I believe), and even the older Geforce 5500 I had in my previous system. I have the latest video drivers, and have installed them recently.
