New computer issues *Please Read*
Hi,
im a new member on this forum and i would like to hear what some tech's think of my problem. I have bought a new system with these specs: Gigabyte 8VT800-L motherboard P4 3.0 HT 800fsb 6600 GT AGP 128mb 512 ddr 400 120 seagate hdd Running my computer is no problem, but when running games is when the trouble starts. playing gunbound will give me "internal data has changed please restart gunbound" this error happens often and after posting on there forum i got no help. Other games will play but occasionaly they will freeze or a blue screen error will come up but doesnt have any detail what has caused the problem just says an error ocurred and windows shutdown blah blah blah. After the computers restarts windows will tell me a driver has caused the problem or the CPU has reported a hardware failiure. Half-life 2 gives me "Memory could not be read error" alot of people recieve this and i have tried replacing my ram and still the problem persists. I have latest Nvidia 69.93 drivers, latest bios etc The other problem which is really annoying me is i cannot unzip multi-archive compressed files. winrar will tell me most the of files are corrupt but after tryin to unzip them about 10 times it will work.. on all other computers i have tried these on they have unzipped smoothly, again i tried diffrent ram for this still no help. I have taken my computer to manufacture to check twice now. but they told me they are sofware issues and they cannot help. but i have formatted my computer about 5 times! Ok well i know this is a big post any help will be appreciated. Thanks! DeMoN Last edited by DeMoN_453; 01-19-2005 at 03:45 AM. |

Going by the problems you described (errors, freezes etc) i would first think its the memory.
DL a program called memtest86 and run it for a few hours and see if it reports any errors. If yes then you have a few choices - maybe your memory timings are too tight and relaxing them could help. Raising the memory voltage could also help. I dont know what kind of memory you have but if its faulty it might be the best choice to replace it. If the memory turns out to be fine we can check out some other things. Keep us updated.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have been told before about memory timings, thing is i cant change them with my motherboard.. for some reason my bios does not have that option. Is there a program that can do it for you? I used cpu-z to check the timings this is what came up. Frequency: 200mhz CAS# Latency: 2.5 RAS# to CAS#: 4 RAS to precharge: 4 TRAS#: 8 Thanks Last edited by DeMoN_453; 01-19-2005 at 03:52 PM. |

If your board doesnt let you choose them then they probably run at their default speed. I dont think you can change memory timings on the software side - that has to be done in the BIOS.
Anyways - still try Memtest86 and see if it comes up with errors.

If memtest reported errors you have a stick of bad memory. The only thing that will take care of the problem is to buy a new stick.
