Power button dead

It seems like the power switch has burned out, but I know enough about computers that the obvious is not always the answer. If I turn on the power switch on the Zalman power supply (350Watt) I think, It starts to power on about 1 sec then, shuts off. No response from the front power switch. If I don't get any other advice here, I'll try shorting the wires at the front power switch to eliminate that possibility.
I have a one year old P4 3.0 800FSB, Intel D875PBZ, 1GB DDR, propritary ATI 8500 video card for Pinnacle Liquid Edition(video editing hardware and software), Lian L1 alum case, Win XP Pro.

Thanks,

Chuck

1. make sure that the mobo isn't set to "clear cmos" mode
2. it sounds like its the power supply. :-(

Wink

Thanks slick,

I'll check the jumper and or take out the cmos battery for 10 minutes to clear cmos, then I'll short the switch as the next check. It may be time to update the bios after I get it going.

I took the front cover off to short the power switch. I shorted the switch. Nothing. I pulled all the power switches preparing to replace the power supply. I snapped the power button back into place, and then I noticed another switch hanging loose. It was the real power switch. When the cover was off, I was shorting the reset switch. As a way of eliminating this problem, the power swich should always have a snap sound when depressed. Unfortunately, now the power stays on but the computer is not booting. I'm glad I took the front cover off. The fans were covered with dust. Now I have to find out why it's not booting. Depressing the front power button 4 sec will not shut down the computer.

While I was pulling the cables from the drives, I accicently pulled the main power cable from the mobo and the primary ide connection( I have two HD's).Things are ok here now.

The main lesson I've learned from this is that the fans and interior of the computer need to be cleaned on a scheduled cycle, especially if wall to wall carpet is present. We took all of our carpets out and are installing Brazilian cherry so it should be cleaner here.
