cant connect to internet after reformat

basically i have just formatted and put on XP. using the driver disc everythign works perfectly apart from one thing.

my mobo is ECS geforce 6100m
windows xp pro sp2

when it came to the lan drivers there were two folders to choose from, nvidia or realtek, i chose nvidia first seeing as the mobo is by them. but i got a hardware not found message. so i did realtek instead and it installed without errors, but still the computer does not register the port,

nothing is showing up in network places, and still a yellow question mark by a device in the manager, which i can only assume if the ethernet.

is there something obvious im missing? when i plug in the ethernet cable the little led lights up and flashes like its active, but no matter what there is no activity on the pc.

really hope you can help me out. because once i get this lan thing sorted the xp installation will be perfect and clean.

thanks

~
Idris

Re: cant connect to internet after reformat

in the device manager your network card should show under network cards/ adapters
if it's not there, it's not recognized, if it is there then it is recognized by the hardware but the software can not communicate with it, alas yellow triangle.

is this an amd board, am2 socket?
if so, here is a link for the GeForce6100SM-M(V1.0/1.0A) version of the board
download the latest driver and give it another try

Re: cant connect to internet after reformat

yeah its AMD 4200+ dual core, and i am pretty sure it AM2 yes.

there is no section in device manager saying network adapter or ethernet or anything.

so there might be something wrong with the port, but if that was the case i dont know why the led on the ethernet cable itself are lighting up as if data is going through it.

the device with the yellow question mark by it is under other devices and is labelled 'other pci bridge device'

thats pretty much all the info i can think to give. i will ty those drivers right now and report back with a post edit, but im thinking if its not showing up in device manager, drivers wont help that.

thanks a lot and i hope this extra info can help pinpoint the problem :)

Re: cant connect to internet after reformat

yeah i have., ones that my dad sent from original disk that came with the pc and now ones from that site linked above.

it doesn't seem to help, the only thing it installs is smbus and storage device. nothing to so wiht lan or ide or anything like that is put in the setup box.

oh i forgot to mention, although i shouldn;t think thiswould be a problem.

the computer came built with windows vista oem installed on it. then i reformatted and put in windows xp, coudl this be causing the problem in any way??

if i cant sort this out soon ish i will probably just go to a computer shop and buy an ethernet card.

thanks for all the help guys and i hope there is still something that i can try that can maybe help :)

Re: cant connect to internet after reformat

in the device manager click on the computer and select "scan for new devices"
did you attempt to install the newer drivers yet?

you could also right-click on the item in the device manager with the yellow triangle and update the driver. instead of looking online, point it to the cd and see if it finds something suitable.

the different operating systems should not make a difference
is the driver cd you have for vista drivers or does it include 2k/xp drivers?
when you go through the install process it should list all the drivers for the devices it installs, do you see the network adapter driver listed there.

btw, no changes in the bios about the lan controller, right?
