blank monitor

my monitor went blank, total blackness. Have no idea what caused it or what to do about it. I have Windows Vista I tried my windows key to see if my menu would come up so I could shut it down, nothing happens, I hit "F1" & nothing happens "contol, alt. delete", "escape", unplugged it, disconnected it & re connected it & still nothing, I can't shut it down except by the power button & still it takes a few minutes. After shutting down, I've hit "F8" to start in safe mode, & every other thing I can think of, I hear it come on, my fan runs, some times louder than others, but I still have total blackness on my monitor. Can you please help???
