CD/DVD Rom drive stopped working

My cd/dvd rom drive just stopped working. i could play dvds, cds and run games on it earlier, but one day i start up my computer, wack a movie in and nothing. I thought it was just the movie, but then i tried all of my discs, games cd's etc.

the little light goes on for about 3 seconds and i can hear the disc spinning, but after the 3 seconds, it all just stops. the computer never shows any sign that a disc has been inserted. i can eject the discs and such which shows that the cd/dvd drive is still working.

Nothing has happened to this computer since it last worked. it has just stopped today. Why? (Why do i always get the unsolvable problems that make no sense!)

Re: CD/DVD Rom drive stopped working

no thats no help for my problem. However i think this problem is cause by a bigger one. Windows will not startup properly unless i F8 into it, and boot HDD-blablabla.

if i turn on the computer and not fiddlde with anything, it will sit at the black screen with the blinking underscore for eternity.

Re: CD/DVD Rom drive stopped working

Open Windows Explorer. Is the ROM drive listed?

If it's not there, go to Start > Run > regedit and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values from this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Class \ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then reboot and look in Windows Explorer again.

Important: Make a backup (export) before making any changes to the registry.
