What would make my computer faster?

Hey there, I always seem to have trouble with speed on this computer (Dell), whenever I open the internet or start a program, it always works so slowly. Heres my question: Just what type of hardware can I get or switchout that can make my PC go faster?

Ram/memory

We need to know what model dell it is and what operating system you are running along with how much ram is currectly installed to be sure before making recomendations

My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium and the name on my modem says Inspiron 531S

Edit: Nevermind, found the ram. Its 4.00 GB

Click start then right click computer and select properties, the amount of ram installed will be listed under system

4GB of ram is enough for that system, and I don't know any other hardware you can change to make it run faster.

Please check the following,,,,,,,,

Inside the case is free of dust especially the cpu's heatsink.
There are not to many uneeded things in the startup tab in msconfig.
The computer is virus and spyware clean
You recently ran disk cleanup and defrag

look at upgrading the cpu

It might not be a hardware problem. It could be programs/services running in the background, realtime security scans, lack of free hard drive space, fragmented hard drive, too many programs running at once, spyware, etc.

Do you have Norton installed?

This article gives some good advice for speeding up your computer. Is your PC running slow...?

I do have norton installed, 2009 if i recall. Well i have plenty of memory about 300 some gigabytes of memory is free.

norton is HUGE resource hogger

try uninstalling norton for now and see if you like NOD32

remove norton with this

you need a anti virus program on unless you want to reformat your comp from fatal errors

I don't like all in one software suites

NOD32 - antivirus
spybot - antispyware
Comodo- Firewall

PcSurgeon looks shiny buts its probably sucks as compared to what its "supposed" to do

I usualy go to pcpitstop.com and do the full system scan. Ive been using this for years and have had no issues.
I dont buy anything recomended but the site does show you how to manualy fix the issues found.
pcpitstop.com is totaly free.

I use avg free and kerio firewall and my hardware firewall as well
