Help please with setting up another tower using my existing monitors mouse & keyboard

I use my computer mainly for video editing and although it is quite a good spec for SD video I am thinking about building a new pc in the new year for HD video editing.

However I would like to use my exisiting dual monitor setup and believe that I need a KVM switch box, but I am not familiar with these items.

I am not looking necessarily to network the pcs (or even use them at the same time) as I would keep one just for editing without internet access and the other one for general private/office use but with internet access.

What advice can you give me please on the best way to set this up?

Thanks, Paolo

Re: Help please with setting up another tower using my existing monitors mouse & keyb

A KVM switch will work with 2 or more computers and One keyboard ,one mouse and ONLY ONE monitor as there is no provision on the switch to plug in a second monitor.
I have mine set up so that I can have one computer use dual monitor setup and the other single monitor by plugging the shared monitor into the KVM switch and the second monitor plugged into the second video adapter on the Computer that you want as dual monitor.

Re: Help please with setting up another tower using my existing monitors mouse & keyb

Thanks Brian for that but when I googled this just before I asked on this forum I came across this site: http://www.probsolvexpress.com/produ...partno=SV421DD which suggests I can use dual monitors. However as I said in my post I am not familiar with any of this KVM technology which is why I asked.

So do you not think it is possible to run two pcs with dual monitors?

My original thought was to keep the editing pc away from the internet so as to avoid any problems but of course I'll need registrations and updates so I'll probably need to network them in some way after all.

Before I start to think about components and building the new pc I just need to clarify that I can use both monitors as I don't want to have monitors oozing out of every orifice.

If this dual set up is possible are there any points I need to understand to make everything work ok or do I simply just plug everything in and fire it up?

Cheers, Paolo

Yes if you use the switch in your link or a similar dual monitor switch. Sorry but I had not seen a dual monitor switch before this. The only problem will be if you want DVI connections, I use THIS ONE.
After you plug everything in you need to go to your control panel and set each computer up just like you had to when you setup your present setup

Thanks Brian, It all sounds straightforward now and I'll check out the switches with DVI connectors. Cheers, Paolo
