Re: Computer messing with tv

usually caused by RF interference. Do your video cables have RF choker cores on them? You can unplug the monitor video cable to see if that's part of it.

Re: Computer messing with tv

RF chokes (RF cores) are the large barrells or rings on cabling. So does only the tower have to be on for the lines to appear, only the monitor, or do both have to be on?

Re: Computer messing with tv

only the tower as soon as i turn it on long diagnal lines apear on the tv screen they started out faint but today they became thicker makeing it impossible to watch tv while the computer is on as soon as the tower shuts off the picture becomes clear with no lines i dont know if its related but ive been burning up power supplys the supply would last a few weeks to a month then the resistor will burn up but ive been told its cause i have been buying the cheap 30 dollar power supplys like diablo and echostar i have a p4 3.4ghz processor 4gb ram ati hd 3650 video card i started out with a assasin 500w supply then now im at a echostar 680w till i can afford one of the better brands and i do beleive the tv cables have the barrels on them cuase they are the digital cables directv hooked up

Re: Computer messing with tv

are you using surge protectors for both? The only thing I can think of is to make sure both are plugged into differnet outlets with different breakers.

Sometimes a cheap power supply in the pc will cause RF interference.

nice call. An AC motor on the same breaker line as any television will create lines on the screen. Some surge protectors will filter the AC noise, some won't.

Re: Computer messing with tv

Getting a name brand psu will probably cure the problem. I'd think they have better components and shielding.

Re: Computer messing with tv

only thermaltake toughpower series are reccomended. If you have a 7800 or under you should be good on a 600-650 (maybe 550 depending on components), for 7800 up a 750 or 850 would be better. I have a 9800GTX on 650W, but i'm pushing the line.

Re: Computer messing with tv

There's no guarantee a new psu will absolutely cure the problem, but that is where I'd start.

Re: Computer messing with tv

I found this site while having a similar problem! I dont know if the lines would appear when watching TV since I use my TV as my monitor only. I just moved to HDMI on my TV recently and for the first time.

I got those static lines across the screen as well which appeared to happen less when I would move the refresh rate down to 30Hz. I read this thread and decided to try the cheaper solution first.

The Surge Protector.

To my right I have an RCA Surge protector, and to my left I have a Dynex surge protector. Rather than moving both components I simply moved the PC to the Dynex protector and IT WORKED!! No lines what so ever. My power supply is as generic as they can get.

Thanks!

That would me to think ground fault loop or the mentioned AC noise in that case.

Re: Computer messing with tv

wow, havent see one act like that before. Are you using VGA, DVI, DVI to HDMI adapter, or straight HDMI? Surely it's not the graphics engine of the TV. I've used my laptop connected to the 42" DLP at home often to watch movies, connected by VGA.

Re: Computer messing with tv

I am using a Dynex DVI - HDMI converter cable. I bought another one to test the cable. There is also a Geek Squad brand available and I can always but the monster cable if needed.

I have a 32 inch tv that I can try it on though!

Re: Computer messing with tv

the problem is more likely your tv ,and not your computer.
did you try to degauss your tv ???
check out the Wiki on degaussing.
the internal components of a tv are designed to filter
out all the unwanted signals.
anything electrical can cause this, radios, vacumn cleaners,
etc,etc.etc!etc?
in the past the didn't know how to deal with it,
now they do know how to,but they don't because
everything is made so damn cheap!!!
