no broadband available in my area
I currently use a dial-up service for my internet activity and AOL as my ISP.
Verizon does not support broadband (DSL) in my location. I need faster, consistent and reliable internet access so that I can take on-line college classes. I know that there are wireless (aircards) typically for laptops but why can't I use one of those for the home pc? |

Re: no broadband available in my area
Hello sl0pitch
because your system does not have the ability to have the card installed to it it takes a special slot to be able to incert the card into so that it can fuction properly i do not know if they make an internal or exsternal adapter for that this is interesting & the first time i have come across this / i will check to see if this can be done thru the usb device or as internal device i will be back Mike

Re: no broadband available in my area
Hello ,
i did just a quick search and did not find anything but here is an idea for you , do you have a cell ph. ?? you can use your cell phone as a router and get internet that way thru a usb device , i have not done this for i have no cell ph. but i do know many people who do this with there systems for when they go on vacation & camping this i do need to check into / it is just a matter of configuration hope this helps Mike

Re: no broadband available in my area
Hi there-
I work as a recruiter for an online university. Many of the students that I work with have 56K and they are doing fine. Have you thought about Satellite service like Hughesnet? I know they are pricey compared to cable or DSL. Are you able to do the classes at all with 56K? |

Re: no broadband available in my area
thanks for your reply. I have a neighbor that went to satellite but found that it was dropping off too often. He switched back to dial-up. 56K is fine unless there is java script or photos or video, etc.

Re: no broadband available in my area
Of course I'm spoiled with DSL at home and T1 at work but maybe you could find someone you know that has it and see if it will solve the problem? Or if you have a verizon store let them demo it.
