Compaq S4000v issues
Alright, here goes:
I have a Compaq Presario S4000v tower computer, with stability issues (it would crash randomly.) Eventually, we did some hard drive diagnostics and discovered the hard drive was dead. We got a new HDD, installed Ubuntu, everything should be fine, right? It still seems to crash. Randomly while doing anything (even in single-user mode) it can crash, it seems to enjoy crashing updates, randomly closing Firefox (then promptly crashing) and occasionally just resetting for no apparent reason. Sometimes when starting it up again the BIOS will claim not to see the keyboard, requiring the power to be cycled or the keyboard unplugged, and replugged. I know this isn't software: I don't think Linux causes BIOS issues, and this seems to happen even on a Knoppix livecd. I can't figure it out. Am I overloading the power supply? (1 cd, 1 new, tested, hdd, I think a winmodem is still in there.) Is the power supply or motherboard or CPU toast? Where would I look to figure this out? If you need I can get more specific model numbers. Thank in advance, rtty P.S. I put this in Other because I have no clue where it would go. |
