Major Problem with dvd-rom drive

Hey all, I had today one big problem that never happened to me before, here is brief review of what happened:

First of all , my cousin got a brand new computer with windows xp home edition , the pc had some minor problems down the line , nothing big , after he and his friends messed up the pc with a bad format , I who know a little bit about fixing pc was told about the problem , I asked him to give me his original windows cd but he didn't find it , and no - one knows where is at , anyway his friend gave him an original home edition cd to format and install again , I had a guide to help me follow the setup since I never formatted computers with windows xp operating system , during setup my cousin told me he want one partition instead of 2 so I deleted the second partition in the installation process (I press D when it showed me both partitions) , Then I went to do a full format on the driver C , after finishing the formatting , the installation started and at 92% percent of the installation we heard a noise from the pc of something mixing (like a blender) , and then we heard a small sound that sounded like explosion , I tried to open the cd-tray and got small pieces of what was previously known as windows xp home edition , his computer is new , less then 6 months I think , but the problem is that the cd is gone and I don't know what to do since its a cd he got from his friend ?

Did anyway here happen to know what went wrong?

And what can I do, I think I have warranty for the computer and DVD but I don't know if it will help.

Thanks a lot in advance.

This is not all that uncommon, I've had two systems in here that exploded disks. I was able to clean the one out and use the drive after the event, but the second one totally trashed the drive. When you think about spinning that flimsy CD at 10,000 RPM, it's not all that surprising that they come apart occasionally.

Thanks

But what can I do , the computer is new , and I know if it was disc of mine I wouldn't feel so bad since its a disc of a friend of my cousin I don't know what his thoughts on this issue will be , he could have given me a damaged disc but I couldn't prove it now.
