mouse and keyboard not responding

Hi,

I have done a search on all of the "mouse and keyboard not responding/working, etc." threads and have been unable to find a solution to my problem.

I returned from the long 4th of July weekend to find my computer on a black screen with this microsoft message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced

I used this procedure from Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269075/en-us

to restore a backup of the system hive to get the system up and running again.

But after using the repair console tool and getting the system returned to a normal-looking desktop state, both my keyboard and mouse have stopped responding.

The keyboard enter, up, down and sideways keys work when I enter the BIOS, but the keyboard does not respond when the computer gets to the desktop state.

The mouse also is not responding, but I did get a "Found New Hardware" message for it when I first got to the desktop. However I was unable to click on either the "OK" or "No" buttons on any messages at the desktop to go forward with the installation and thus the installation wouldn't continue.

I also have tried the mouse with a PS/2 adapter and have used its regular USB connector with no success. I've also tried several different USB ports as well as trying an entirely different mouse and an alternate keyboard.

The keyboard that I presently use has a PS/2 adapter and the alternate one I tried has a USB connection but neither of them worked.

I have checked all of my settings in the BIOS to verify that the USB ports are enabled.

Lastly, I have done a CMOS reset by pulling the battery and removing/replacing the jumper but I still cannot get either the keyboard nor the mouse to work.

Can anyone provide any solutions to this?

Thanks in advance!

Andy
