Question USB problem!

Hello, and thank you in advance for any help!

My problem:

The USB ports on my computer have stopped working, they no longer install new hardware. The computer is XP and has been unused for a few months. The USB ports will however work my mouse and keyboard, but not any other hardware, even with the drivers installed, e.g. wireless adapter, printer, web cam. (all are compatible with xp) When I plug one in the computer tells me,

"Found new hardware, a problem occurred during installation. Your new hardware might not work properly?"

This is becoming increasingly frustrating as I can't see the problem when my mouse / keyboard are fine! The ports are all 2.0 and were working earlier in the year.

Any help is gratefully received!

Chris

P.s. I don't have a start up disk for this computer.
