Panasonic GS80 transfer of DV to PC via Firewire cable results in 'malfunction' mssg.

(mssg=message)

I bought this cable ( here)
and it ended up being the right match for my Panasonic GS80 DV camera, as well as for the port on my PC. But when I hook everything up, and turn on the camera, it gives me a bubble message (down by Date/Time on the taskbar) that says "your device has malfunctioned" and to click here to figure out the problem, but all it shows me when I click the little bubble is a list with one item on it, and tells me that it 'failed' or is 'unknown' and stuff.

I think I may need to find the CD that came with my DV camera (although I don't remember if there was a CD; I cannot seem to find any at the moment...it may be somewhere, though). I'm guessing there are drivers or something that I need to install.

I hope I did not cause it to 'malfunction' by plugging it in when the PC was on...I probably should not have done that. Although I did turn everything off the time that I finally got everything plugged into the right stuff, and turned the camera on (only to then see the message described above).

I'd really like to get this whole thing figured out, and finally get my footage onto my PC, and make some cool videos :P

What kind of PC do you have? Is the firewire port on the motherboard or add on card?

Re: Panasonic GS80 transfer of DV to PC via Firewire cable results in 'malfunction' m

I have a computer that I bought from Ibuypower.com about 1.5 years ago. When I look inside, I see a red and yellow cord grouped together, running from the firewire port and to another section, sort of where a big group of cables is tied together, near the CD-rom drive and harddrive, so I can't really tell if it's going to the motherboard itself or not..I'm not very computer savvy, I know.. :P

When I have used these in the past, I plug it in with the computer on. I have not needed to load drivers for the camera.

I suspect a problem with your firewire port on the pc. See if the manufactor has updated drivers for the firewire.

Re: Panasonic GS80 transfer of DV to PC via Firewire cable results in 'malfunction' m

Does this website have any links that will get me what I want? I already gave a link to the Firewire cable I bought in my original post...but that didn't really help...if it's a firewire card I have instead, then maybe this link has some useful stuff... I guess I don't really know what I'm doing very well, sorry : /

Here

I need to know what the cable is plugging into on the computer. The cable looks like the correct one.

This link list 5 firewire cards. Do you know which one you have installed?

Re: Panasonic GS80 transfer of DV to PC via Firewire cable results in 'malfunction' m

I actually found a port on my video camera that I did not know existed, and then I was able to use this device that I had recently bought (that uses a USB cable/red-white-yellow cable) to successfully transfer the video to my computer. I suppose it might have been slower via this USB method, but the way I did it, I just let the video play back on the camera, and at the same time it captured it with the program that came with this device (called 'Dazzle'). So it took about 58 minutes to transfer, because that's how much footage I had on the DV tape in the camera...but that was OK for me, as I wasn't in a rush. I've heard that the Firewire is supposed to be faster and stuff, so I guess I could figure that out eventually too, but for now I guess I've got a good enough solution.
