hp scanner problem

My scanner quit working on my HP officejet 5110xi all in one so I went to their web site and down loaded the updated driver. When I was done I got message at the bottom right of my screen stating that my driver is out of date. When I click on the icon with a xpc it tells me to do something that is not possible to do because the screen is blank with no info in the middle unlike the example they have has.

Try uninstalling the old software using the add/remove programs in the control panel.

Now try to install the downloaded software.
