Question Dead monitor = no speakers

I am working on an HP Pavilion which came with a monitor into which my speakers plugged. The monitor died. Money being tight, I attached a Sony monitor, which works fine, but which has no connection for speakers. I cannot find a speaker connection on the CPU, either back or front. There is, however, a headphone connection (into which the speakers will not plug).

Am I stuck with headphones from this point on? Or is there some kind of adapter I can get which will permit me to plug the speakers into the headphone outlet?

I find it ridiculous that the Pavilion should have no connection for the speakers other than the one on the recently deceased monitor. Can anyone provide some advice?

Thanks a lot.

Re: Dead monitor = no speakers

What kind of connector did the monitor have? This isn't like any system I have ever seen... VGA and DVI connectors have no provisions to carry audio, so are you sure there's nothing on the back that it was plugged into in order to carry the audio out the front?

Re: Dead monitor = no speakers

There is an opening in the back of the CPU into which the male plug at one end of the speakers goes (it's an "out" line). Then there's a female plug on the speakers that connected to the monitor, and it's that female plug that I have nowhere to use. Without it, the speakers are mute. I'm sorry I can't explain it any better than that. It's like I have to complete a circuit to get sound, and there's not anyplace else to complete the circuit to.

Re: Dead monitor = no speakers

Lordy, but I wish I could. Every bit of literature I have says only "HP Pavilion Home PC." Is there someplace on the CPU I should be looking?

Aha! I just crawled around the CPU and found something that says "HP Pavilion a465c." Is that the model number? (I hope, I hope.)

Grin Re: Dead monitor = no speakers

Problem solved.

First, thanks to those who participated in helping move us toward a (no-brainer) solution.

Next, a new set of speakers with their own power supply cleared everything up. The old set of speakers was drawing power from the monitor, which seems kind of a dumb arrangement, but there you go.

My computer once again makes noise and music.
