Pin power supply vs motherboard

cpu, HP Pavilion a520n, was working well.Hit power switch to turn on , no response. No power to cpu.Checked all power cords and outlets . A ok for all. monitor powers up, on separate power source. Question arising.
1.is power switch bad ?
2 is power supply bad?
is mother board bad?

No audible sounds heard prior to problem. Unit working well day before.
When pressed p0wer switch to turn on, button lit up for split second and then unit died.
How do I proceed to solve problem?

Re: power supply vs motherboard

I had the same issue with an emachines. First thing I did was replace the power supply - when that did not fix the problem, I replaced the motherboard.

What had happened I guess was the power supply went bad and took out the motherboard. For $6 or so, you can get a power supply tester, but my old power supply tested good, it just fried the mobo so I replaced both.

Re: power supply vs motherboard

remove the 2 wires from the front button at the m/b then touch the 2 pins with a small scredriver for a fraction of a second
this will check if it is a faulty button

Re: power supply vs motherboard

you only touch them together for a fraction of a second not a permanent bridge
