fixing circuit board
ok,well I am not sure this can go here or not, but I think it is better then automotive. Well background, following this site, http://www.q45.org/timers.html , I took the door lock timer out. Testing i held a wire to the bad joint, and it worked, tested again and it kind of worked but there was a spark and a burnt smell. (it was dark) I came inside and looked what I did. Everything seems fine.. except now in addiation to the bad solder point (ther was one that is bad, and a second on the way out I see), the backing is mostly just a green, but now I just added a burnt spot were you can also see metal and some black. It is not a big spot, but I will post a few pictures, sorry for the horrible quality of them as they are either from a cell phone or a webcam (all I have, sorry). Is there any way to fix this type of damage or am I stuck getting another board?
if anyone kows how to take a better pictre with what I got, tell me and I will. Last edited by Snoopdogie187; 03-17-2008 at 08:31 PM. Reason: forgot picture |

Re: fixing circuit board
Just looking at the bored I noticed under the light green areas is a thin layer of coper, and under the dark green is more of an insultator. I testedit again quickly and everything still works I think, but how do i conect two pieces of metal. Also, I'm not sure if a capictor is going bad, on one of them is yellow, its just on the top and also on the plastice around it (but still just on the top). Is this ok or should be replaced?

Re: fixing circuit board
Hi Snoopdogie187
Fixing a PC board can be tricky if you have a run that has opened then you would have to jump the opening. if it is a small opening you can sometimes bridge it with a little solder. If it is shorted under a component or where it feeds through the board the I would get another board.

Re: fixing circuit board
It does seem a small enough gap to fix, I did call the dealer and they want lke $113 for a new one, and the person I talked to didn't even know what it was. I see them on ebay for like 20 to 30 but I think ever single board made in the early 90s had the same problem, and if so, it would mean I just have to fix the new board unless someone already did it. I'm more worried about what is on the capicitor since I think I could change that but it would just take time.

Re: fixing circuit board
If you can find a replacement cap then it wouldn't hurt to change it if it is questionable.

Re: fixing circuit board
it almost sounds cheaper just to get another car at that point, we never even put that much into the car tha im fixng up right now (its what my mom usually drivers but i borrow when im home sometimes) ad we got it for like $800. I thnk the blue book value is like 2000 though.

Re: fixing circuit board
The book on the Suzuki is around $10,000. so its worth fixing.
I used to do the same thing get a fixer, fix it and run it till it dripped junk it and get another. Thats when I had more inclination to work on them. Now I prefer to let someone else bust there knuckles.

Re: fixing circuit board
Well have a Happy Easter today, and yea then worth fixing, just hope its not going to need to be replaced later again.
For now I find it fun just to mess around with cars and computers anyway, but don't always have the money to do what I want. |
