VGA:Monitor to DVI:Videocard
I have an old VGA monitor (19 inch Dell flatscreen) that I'm trying to connect to my computer which only have DVI outputs. I'm using an adapter/converter that attaches to the end of my blue VGA plug and connects to my videocard. When I plug my monitor in, it makes that new hardware is recognized sound but I get no display. Restarting the computer and replugging doens't work. What could be going wrong?

Re: VGA:Monitor to DVI:Videocard
To make this work a few things have to be considered. Your DVI port on your computer has to be DVI-I (supports analog and digital video), most video adapters are this way and I would expect yours is also but I have seen some that are DVI-D (digital video only). If you video adapter is DIV-D you can not use a simple DVI to VGA adapter, you will need a scan converter. If your video port is DVI-I then your DVI to VGA adapter has to support the DDC pins, these pins allow the monitor to identify itself to the video adapter in the computer so the computer knows what video settings to load. Lastly your video adapter has to be able to support the resolution your VGA monitor is identifying, you mentioned your VGA monitor is old, the question is how old, if the monitor is identifying a resolution below 1024 x 768 your DVI video adapter may not support that low of a resolution.
