At what time/point does it reboot? Are you running a particular program or game when it reboots? Does it reboot at the same time/point ?

its always different everytime it reboots....i just went to take a shower and it rebooted within 20 minutes....before it rebooted sometime within 6 hrs maybe also in the 20 minute range and no its doesnt reboot during a specific game...it happened once when i was playing counter strike....and the other times once when i was using irc and another when i was changing a cfg file for a game...and then the other times while i was away from the computer....and i just reformatted so i seriously dont think its windows
i dont want it to be a hardware problem cuz then itl probably cost money to fix it lol.....but most likely it probably is. |

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOPEFULLY THIS WORKS...."Win XP and Win 2000 have a default setting to restart at just about any error. It makes things difficult to analyze when it blows through and restarts the computer. Settings / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings. Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure." AND IF IT STILL RESTARTS I HATE WINDOWS FOREVER.....

What you describe is probably the power supply failing. No windows tweaking will help that.

one cause-one solution
Quote:
Hi guys im new to the forum, and i registered primarily to help someone solve this problem, at least one of the causes. I had the same problem, bought new machine last week, and kept restarting randomly, sometimes within seconds, sometimes after 5, ...10 minutes, even an hour. I tried everything, since i read it could be windows xp SP2 related, took me all day, and i didnt accomplish anything. And then i powered the cpu down, and looked whats happening with it and all the peripherals. And bingo, i spotted that the cpu restarts as soon as my cable modem does something. As you know, cable modems are never idle, and they communicate with the server and cpu frequently.I tested the same scenario several times just to make sure it happens only upon any modem activity, and yes that was the only trigger. So i went into network connection settings, specifically the ethernet card properties, and after digging deeper, i got into advanced properties, At the very bottom of the advanced properties there was something called Wake UP Capabilities, by default it was On, i swithched it to Off, and shut the system down. Right away i noticed the indicator network port light was turned off this tme at the back of the cpu, and.......problem was solved. So in a nutshell, my system was set up by default to detect any sort of internet traffic, and modem activity, which 'wakes up' the system. I guess windows shutdown issues are many, and this is just one scenario, but i thought it may help someone solve this very annoying, and frustrating problem -)) adrian p |
