USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Hi,
the thing is, my cousin gave me his PC, and I had to format it because of all the spyware and stuff. Before that, the BIOS had a password, so me and my friend (his more a computer guy than I am) had to take a battery of the motherboard to reset it. I then installed Win XP and everything was going well. But I noticed that my USB ports don't work. If I plug in the usb key the computer does nothing, if I plug my camera in again the computer does nothing etc.etc... So I believe the problem is in the bios, because of the reset we've done. So the best thing is that I tell you what things I've already done in Bios -> ACPI - is disabled (I believe this is the right thing ? ) PNP OS - no Usb Emulation (keyboard and mouse) - is ENABLED Assign IRQ for Usb - Enabled I can't find USB LEGACY in BIOS, there is only USB Emulation -> is this the same thing? So I'm thinking the Bios doesn't need to be upgraded ->it already has the functions for USBs right? Because the thing is, the motherboard IMO sux, it is QDI K8V800 and I can't find anything useful on their site (but hey, maybe I'm blind.)http://www.qdigrp.com/qdisite/eng/index.htm and I dunno how to upgrade BIOS (I believe it is a phoenix award smth.) and I would rather not flash it because I'm afraid that smth bad can happen What are my other options? Can the problem be in windows, because I don't have any drivers for the motherboard? Do I need drivers for USB ports?? I have Windows XP SP2 and device manager looks like this http://shrani.si/f/23/Kv/6HVayn2/usb.jpg I really don't know what to do, I've been doing this computer crap for two days now, without an effect, I'm desperate and depressed.. so guys PLEASE HELP ME |

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Right click the My computer icon on the desktop....then properties.... then Hardware.... then device manager and check for any yellow flags.
You can uninstall the USB ports there and let the computer reinstall them. In the Device Manager. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers. Plug in and then test to see if the problem is fixed. Mike

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Follow the instructions to uninstall each of them and let the computer find them again. Do you have the motherboard chipset drivers to reinstall. Mike

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Hi,
I uninstalled USB ports and I restarted the computer. Windows found new hardware and then I reinstalled the Via drivers (that link you gave me). Restarted the computer again, but ports still don't work. Do you think the problem might be in Bios? Is it possible that the ports don't even work anymore (but then how do windows find them ->that means they aren't dead right?) Thanks for the help |

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Usually the only bios setting for USB is enable/disable look for that, and try to disable USB emulation for the keyboard and mouse. There is the possibility that they just don't transfer data anymore. Mike

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
Worst case scenario - USB controller on the MB is fried.
I had this happen to my PC. The power supply for my computer kicked the bucket, so then I replaced it. In the process I accidentally broke the SATA connector on my 300GB hard drive, so then I replaced the drive and installed Windows. Then found out my USB mouse didn't work, thought it might be because of the slipstream XP disc I was using, so I reinstalled using my original XP disc - still no go. Mucked around with USB drivers in Windows, played with BIOS settings, still nothing. Tried plugging in a USB device on any USB port I had (front panel, rear panel), no go. Windows still recognise that I had USB ports, and when I plug in a USB light (one of those bendy lights for notebooks), the light comes on so obviously power still goes through those ports, but not one of my USB ports work in recognising anything. I then tried removing the battery to the BIOS for a day, reinstalled and tried it - nothing; I was about the throw my computer out the window. Then at work I was reading different forums and found that the USB controller on the motherboard (south bridge I believe?) can be dead without Windows detecting any problems. I tried everything else I could possibly think of, so therefore that is the only valid explanation. Although the firewire ports still worked, I never followed it up but I believe firewire is controlled by a separate controller on the motherboard? |

Re: USB ports don't work PLEASE HELP ME
I would try a PCI usb card before replacing the board. Unless you just want to upgrade. Mike
