hp scanjet 3300C troubles

I need help with my hp scanjet 3300C. I bought it new and have the installation Cd. It worked for 5 years + and now the computer doesn't recognize it. I have it installed on Windows 98SE. I have gone to the HP site, but have not been able to solve the problem. The light comes on until I try to scan and then goes off. When I try to scan, I get a message box that the computer could not find the scanner. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times. I install it and then plug the power cable in and connect the USb cable to the computer. I hope someone can help me with this problem.

did you install the updates from hp after installing from cd?

Do I need updates for Windows 98 SE? If so, which ones. I tried some updates, but they didn't help. My Pc always tell me that it can't find my HP Scanjet 3300C.
