[SOLVED] My disc drives have disappeared

I have been unsuccessful at finding thread on this subject - so sorry if it is addressed elsewhere - I have only found some about the CD/DVD drive.
So - last night I started a backup to my external hard drive. That drive is always the letter J - but before it started to write - I got a message that that letter had been changed to F - and should the backup proceed? Long ago this had happened and it created an entirely new backup that doubled the size of data on the external and I learned at that time how to rename the letter back to the J and did this.
Left -and the backup was successful - but THEN noticed that the disc media slot drives ie where I would put my SD card in - had just vanished and no longer showed up in My Computer - so tested and they also are no longer working or detecting cards.
So - thought maybe system restore would work - but went back like 5 days - and though it tells me the restore is successful - no drives show up.
Any ideas would be so appreciated. NOT sure if this is proper place to post this either.
thanks.

Re: My disc drives have disappeared

I have this problem from time to time. How I cure mine is to turn the pc off, and then unplug the power cord from the back of the pc. I leave it unplugged for about a half an hour, plug it back up and restart. Try it and see if if works.

Re: My disc drives have disappeared

I did this but did not leave off for 1/2 hour - should I shut down normally first?
thanks!

Re: My disc drives have disappeared

Oh my gosh - THANK YOU!! Did boot down normally and then restarted and bam they are back and they are working - just read my SD card and there it was.
Whoa - can't imagine what this is - but glad to have fixed it.
All the best to you.
