External hdd slower connection

i have an external hdd for 2years now. recently ive noticed that upon connecting it to my pc it tends to come up with the message that the usb port connected to it is not usb 2.0 (the bubble that pops up at the bottom right in the task bar - click here to here to see what ports are available.....etc.)

it doesnt happen all the time ...around 1 in 3 times roughly...

the pc i connect it to is capable of usb 2 speeds and iis always connected to that port.

the external hdd is powered though the mains but doesnt have a power switch on the hdd case...so as it always connected through the usb....when i need to access the ext. hdd i just plug it in (as i dont want it to be on all the time.)

...any reasons why it comes up with that message??....i found that when it says that, it only operates at the slower usb 1.1 speed.

Re: External hdd slower connection

Hi error message, I have also encounter that problem before, when you unplug and replug a device many times the contacts on the cable from the device get loose or worn. First try a different usb socket, then I would try a new, good quality cable for the hard drive. Mike

Re: External hdd slower connection

On some motherboards front mounted USB connections are limited to 1.1 while the I/O panel USB ports can be the faster 2.0 Try moving the USB connector to the back of the computer. Are you running XP SP 2?
