[SOLVED] How do I connect this?

My wife bought me a nice new PC for Xmas and was curious about something. My LCD monitor has a DVI input (DVI-D dual link) and my pc only has VGA. I've read online that you can't go from analog to digital with only one cable. What am I going to need to connect my pc to my monitor? My monitor also has a VGA input but I'm using that for my Xbox 360 (not the Elite model). Can someone please explain what type of cables I'm going to need? Thanks.

Re: How do I connect this?

Thanks for the reply buddy.

I'm new at this stuff....how exactly do I connect my cables? I assume that I need to connect this adapter in between my pc and monitor right? In other words, I need to run a VGA cable to the adapter and then a DVI cable from that to my monitor? Is that right? Or, am I just better off getting a DVI card installed? Any suggestions?

Re: How do I connect this?

I can't connect an adapter to my monitor as there is very limited space between the input and the base. There's only room enough for a single cable. I've already experimented with this and unfortunately there's just no room. (damn SOYO monitor!)

I went into a computer store today and asked if there was a way to connect my PC this way and he told me no. The gentleman said that you cannot connect an analog VGA cable to a DVI-D input. Even I were able to do it, he said I wouldn't get any visable picture from the connection. In other words, I have to upgrade to a GeForce 7200 card which has a DVI output on the card. That'll set me back about $50 bucks plus the cost of a DVI cable.

I've decided to just unhook my VGA cable everytime I feel like playing my Xbox 360. I know it's a hassle to unplug it and plug it in everytime, but I don't think it's worth an extra $70 bucks plus I have to bring in my PC to make this work. What do you think?

Re: How do I connect this?

That's about it. There are DVI to Analog adapters but you need the opposite. So as Magnethead indicated just go out and buy a cheapo graphics card that has both analog and DVI (and usually s-video as well) outputs and hook up the monitor directly thru the DVI connections and get fantastic resolution.
