problem installing logitech z10 speakers

Hi, I was just installing the software for my logitech z10 speakers when the installation is interrupted saying,"Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Verify that you have sufficient access to this key, or contact your support personnel." Does anyone know how I could solve this issue? Thank you

what version of windows are you running.

what i mean to say is, is it the same one as your prof says: XP Proffessional Sp2

I had a problem like this, but it was for Office 2000. It seems extremely similar though. Follow the instructions from this address
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236592
, but use it for the logitech software instead of the Microsoft Office software.

Re: problem installing logitech z10 speakers

Hi, I just took a look at the instructions that you gave me but I couldn't find the Logitech software listed as the installation wasn't completed and there were no changes made to the computer due to the error. Although, the situation is quite similar to the link that you sent. Would there be anyway to prevent that message from interrupting the installation? Thanks I appreciate it.

Re: problem installing logitech z10 speakers

This error basically means that you don't have the appropriate permission to update your system or your registry. By installing the logitech software, you are updating a part of your registry. Even if you are logged on as an administrator, this can even sometimes happen if you have upgraded your operating system from a previous version of Windows.
So, you must modify the registry.

But before you do that, if you feel that you will mess something up, back up your registry. Microsoft has sufficient instructions to do that at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

Here's what you should do that hopefully will fix the problem and give you that specific permission you need.

1. Select "Start", "Run", and type "RegEdt32". Click OK.
2. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. In the menu, select "Edit", "Permissions". A dialog will come up.
4. Check "Allow" for "Read" and for "Full Control", then click OK
5. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and repeat steps 3, 4 for the keys "Software" and "System"
6. Expand the "Software" key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for "Classes"
7. Expand the "Classes" key, and repeat steps 3, 4 for "Installer"
8. If you have made any changes in steps 1 through 7, skip to step 10. If you did not make any changes, continue with step 9.
9. Open the "Classes" key, and click on "Installer" . In the menu, click "Security", "Permissions." Click the button marked "Advanced." Check "Reset Permissions on all child objects.", then click OK
10. Close the registry editor
11. Reboot the computer

It might take you a little while, but this should work.
Hope all goes well.

Re: problem installing logitech z10 speakers

I followed the instructions after I backed up the registry with Guided Help but from step 1 to 7 it seems that allow for read and full control are already checked. For "installer" it is already checked but I can't click on it or anything. For step #9 for "Security","Permissions" when I click on advanced instead of "Reset permission on all child objects", it says "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects." Could you please help me on this. Thank you for all your help.

When you open the permissions for the SYSTEM file, do you see the word SYSTEM in the "Group or user names:" column?

Also, are you installing this software with a User Account that has Administrator privileges. If not, try logging off and logging on as someone with Administrator privileges.
