[SOLVED] Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

First of all I would like to state that I am new here so if this thread is in the wrong area I give you my apologies in advance. I received a Razer Diamondback 3G gaming mouse today for X-mas and was very eager to try it out. However, that was not the case when I tried to use it. I installed the software the mouse required to operate and plugged it in. When the installation finished it told me that I needed to restart my computer so I did so. When Windows attempts to load it stays at the COMPAQ screen (I have a Compaq computer) before switching over to a black screen with the following error message:

Windows could not start because the following files were missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install these files.

I have read about this error on other forums and read that this error message is due to hard drive or motherboard problems. I have never opened up my computer or have attempted to modify any of the internal components. This computer is only a year and a half old so I don't think it would fail that quickly. When I plug in my other Microsoft mouse the computer boots fine. I'm very illiterate in this area of computers, so any help/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi BillBobJoe and welcome to TSF

No worries you have posted in the right section
-- Try the mouse on another computer, does it give you the same problem or error?

Re: Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

Thank you for responding. I haven't tried to use the mouse on another computer because I am worried that it will corrupt the file on the other computers. Unfortunately the only other computers I have access to are my parent's laptop and my brother's computer. My parent's are skeptical about me trying to use the mouse on their laptop because they don't want it to mess up the laptop.

Re: Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

Sorry for the double post but I tried it on the laptop and it doesn't detect the mouse so I need the software installed to run it. I read somewhere that the drivers for the mouse are possibly bad but I'm not too sure.

Re: Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

From http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000646.htm

Quote:
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file

If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
7. Type exit to reboot the computer.

I highly doubt that Circuit City is going to give me a copy of Windows XP on behalf of my word saying that they didn't give me one. I've read a similar procedure to fix this problem which involves attempting to restore the file using a command prompt. I haven't had any luck with it so far. I followed the instructions from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=&product=57648&docname=c00188679 and had no luck. I'm beginning to suspect that anyone else who responds to this will say to ditch the mouse, but I'm hoping that someone out there has the solution so I can use this mouse and not have the error problem.

Are you using XP Home or Pro, 32bit or 64bit?

I can extract the file from my CD and post it here for you to download. Then all you need to do is place the file in Windows\System32, overwriting the existing one, and reboot.

I believe I'm using Media Center edition and I'm not sure on the bit. Could you tell me how to check it?

Start > Control Panel > System.

Look at the System details under the General tab to see which version of Window you have.

Sorry, I don't have a Media Center CD, just XP Home and Pro, and can't guarantee that my file will be compatible with your OS. Hang on for some more replies.

Re: Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

OK thanks for your help anyway. I read somewhere on Yahoo that is strongly unadvised to download this file because it is one of the critical files the computer needs to load. What would you have to say about that?

It is a vital file, so you need to be very careful about which version you download and where from.

Re: Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

Update: I tried to install the software on the laptop and boot it up and I received no error message but the computer wasn't detecting the mouse. It seems that nobody has an answer to my problem so I'm going to go over to Circuit City and see what they have to say.

Re: [SOLVED] Razer Diamondback 3G mouse causing ntoskrnl.exe file to be corrupted

Went to Circuit City and talked to someone there. Guy told me it's definitely the mouse so I bought a new one and its working fine. Now alls that left to do is schedule a refund for the mouse from the company I bought it from which is obviously out of your guys hands. Thanks to everyone who offered their help/support. I'll be sure to come back here if I ever have another computer problem :)
