monitor can not power up when connect the monitor to PC tower, help!

When I disconnect the monitor from the pc tower, the monitor can be turn on alone itself, once I connect it to the pc tower, the monitor has shown like it get not enough power to turn on. I have test the monitor on another pc tower, and confirm the monitor is working fine. Does that mean something wrong with the power supply or the motherboard in the tower?

More details-
when the computer startup, I can hear few beeps followed by the strong spinning sound from the fan, yet I don't know if the computer can go into window or not because I can not see display from the monitor

What step can I take to further troubleshoot the pc?

Are you using onboard video or a video card?

You mentioned hearing a few beeps when you should only hear one.

Can you describe these beeps is it one long and two short?

More than two short beeps, about 5 to 6 beeps, not able to get the actual number of beeps sound. I am not sure is onboard video or video card has been used, I have not open the case yet, what happen if it is onboard or not?

Thanks!

Re: monitor can not power up when connect the monitor to PC tower, help!

Some background would help, like, did this computer work for you before? Did someone want to get rid of it and why?

Anyway, the first thing I'd do is open that box to see if anything essential is missing, or disconnected, etc. Unplug everything, turn the computer around, remove the screws along the right edge, slide the side panel off. You can safely power up the computer like this, just don't poke inside while it's on.

The motherboard is getting power from the power supply, and then beeping 'cause something's badly amiss. I'm guessing dead/absent CPU or memory - real show-stoppers. Familiarize yourself with essential internal hardware.

Beep codes vary between motherboards. Try to read the brand & model directly off the motherboard. Then Google beep codes for that particular motherboard. Or you may see the BIOS (CMOS) chip name, e.g. "AMIBIOS" and google from that. Typical beep codes here.

Pong has given you some good advice, follow it and get a idea of the parts inside a pc.

In the back where you connect the monitor, the plug that the monitor cable attaches too is connected to either the motherboard or a video card.

Can you tell witch? If we know this we may be able to direct you to reseating the video card.

Also do you know what ram is and where its located?

can you tell us the brand and model of the computer?
