Cry CD RW won't see discs...

Hi!

Just got my system sorted out and nasties removed thanks to this site, but one problem remains: I have a CD RW of type HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8483B that just refuses to work. It's in slot 1 of a Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo 600 PC running XP and the system finds it and says everything is in order. On removal and reboot, XP just finds it again and says everything works.

The problem looks as follows: When inserting a disc, it won't light up or read. In "My computer" it can always be opened (whether tray is open/closed or disc is inserted or not) and shows it to be empty. Using Nero, which can't find anything wrong with it either (but won't do anything). At present it never works, but earlier this year when the computer was bought it worked intermittently (inserting a disc about 10 times would sometimes make it read and everything would then work just fine).

Where do I start looking for a cure (tried a lot but getting no results)? The support I have is totally unhelpful and don't seem to have a clue nor give me any idea. Just reboot/reinstall XP/return the computer... sad attitude.

Most grateful for any help on this,
Lejonklou
