i recently purchased a USB2.0 4 Port PCI Card and am having difficulty installing it on a Compaq Presario 7940.

Note: I have installed several PCI cards before, but this one is giving me trouble.

After physically installing the card into the slot and then powering on the computer, the standard "Compaq" splash screen comes up and then nothing else. I have dabbled with updating the BIOS, and verifying that the PCI slot is enabled in BIOS.

Can someone shed some light on this issue? I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, here are some more random specifications about the PCI card from a random retail website:

check pnp is enabled in the bios

i have tried another slot, same thing. i have also tried another computer and that worked instantly. PnP in BIOS is enabled.

Could it be that the BIOS is too old to support USB 2.0?

check for a bios update
have you tried through adding new hardware
have you installed sp2 as you don't list it as installed,if not you need to load the usb2 driver

Please list other pci cards installed. What type of video card do you have?

There is no BIOS update available.

If you mean "Add Hardware" from control panel in Windows XP, then no I am not able to do that because the computer just hangs at the boot up 'Compaq' splash screen and I am not able to log into Windows. Other than that I am not sure what other add new hardware function you mean...

Yes, I have Windows XP SP2 installed. I also checked Device Manager and I do not have any USB 2.0 drivers installed, just USB 1.1.

Any other suggestions? Also, I apologize for not posting all of the appropriate information, please let me know if you need more data to help troubleshoot. I really want this fixed, thanks!

Other PCI devices installed:

• Netgear FAS10TX Fast Ethernet Adapter - working fine.
• Creative AudioPCI - working fine.
• S3 Graphics Inc. Savage4 - working fine.

MY video card is a 16MB S3 Graphics Inc. Savage4 card.

The computer is from 2000 I believe. So I am thinking the motherboard or chipset or something is not compatible with the USB 2.0 PCI card. But I want proof or at least a second opinion.

the usb2 driver is part of sp2
does it boot all the way up with the card removed

Yes it does! I have tried the card in another computer and it installed and was used perfectly, that is why I am thinking it is more of an issue with the motherboard than the card itself....

Dai - yes that is the BIOS, but the update is for Win 98 so I did not try it earlier. I ran the update this time and viola! it works!
