calibrating monitor brightness?

i used one of those grayscale images to try to calibrate my monitor yesterday . both my brightness and contrast is set to maximum but i still cannot see the last quarter of the black images. the problem is my monitor is too bright for me at the moment but according to that grayscale , i still have to increase the brightness. most info i've read usually say to leave contrast at maximum and then adjust brightness to be able to see all the changes in that grayscale. do people leave contrast and brightness at maximum? thanks for any input.

Re: calibrating monitor brightness?

brightness is usually around the half way mark,i usually run the contrast at about 75% as it suits my eyesight better

Re: calibrating monitor brightness?

no way my husband would let me use his computer cos i'll probably mess it up. i'm always inadvertently screwing up the computer by letting in viruses and what not in. that's why i get the shitty computer still running on ME. lol

but my problem is not the brightness though, it's being too bright

Re: calibrating monitor brightness?

i can't do that cos that would throw the images i'm manipulating off cos at the moment even with both my brightness and contrast at max. it still need to be even brighter to be roughly calibrated to the grayscale image. so if i lower the brightness and manipulate my images other people with properly calibrated monitors would see my images as way too light so i thnk i'm stuck with the bright screen till i get used to it i supposed. i could also also always lower the brightness again when i'm not dithering about with my images. i just can't believe how bright my screen is and that this is actually normal! lol

Re: calibrating monitor brightness?

if it's a crt you use you can probably pick up a second hand one for next to nothing from someone that has upgraded to lcd

Re: calibrating monitor brightness?

i did think of that but seeing as we don't have a car it's a bit hard to go check out a monitor as i would rather not get a second hand over on the internet. well i would have to save up and maybe get a new crt screen at a future date.. thanks for your help though
