Evil laptop keyboard replacement

I'm new to the forum, so forgive me if I communicate my problem poorly, but here goes:

I have a Compaq Presario 1200 Model # 12XL414 where the keyboard is damaged and requires replacement. I have the new keyboard now and am unsure how to approach the replacement. Do I start from top or bottom of the portable. I am generally technically competant, but I'm sure somebody out there has successfully replaced the keyboard on the above portable.

I would appreciate their help.

I have tried a "search" for this subject on the Forum, but maybe I'm not looking in the correct place. Again, would appreciate feedback. I have the PC on the table right now in anticipation of a response to my request.

Regards,

Ralph

Compaq has complete technicnal manuals for their laptops on their website. Download the manual for your machine, and detailed disassembly/assembly instructions will be at your fingertips.

Compaq Manual

Thank you John for the assistance, but unfortunately the URL offered by the Compaq site does not lead to the correct manual. I ended up with HTTP://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/manual/c00193901.pdf which does not lead to correct manual.

Would appreciate if you, or indeed other Forum members had an appropriate URL to reach the Model 12XL414 Lap Top Technical or Syatem Manual from Compaq.

Regards,

Ralph

I'm surprised I'm having so much difficulty trying to get information on my Compaq Presario 1200 ( part # 12XL414) LapTop. The Manual is not readily available either on the Compaq WEB site or indeed on any URL that I have been attempting to reach. One key on my keyboard is damaged necessitating a new Keyboard which I have now purchased, but I cannot get information on how I approach the replacement.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ralph

i've looked for a good while to find a manual but have no luck either.

another thought though...if it's just one damaged key could you not gently prise it off and swap it with a new one?

Thank you Xko for the suggestion, but it's damaged beyond simple repair, thus forcing me to purchase a new keyboard which I now have since last week but unfortunately I'm a bit nervous about removing the keyboard and thought the forum would advise, or indeed suggest what "not" to do in case I unscrew the wrong items first. A simple step by step procedure is what I am looking for but unfortunately the Compaq WEB site is not much help. In fact I wonder when was the last time Compaq attemped to check the "accuracy" of their information on their Manuals. As you've found I'm sure, the 12XL414 Manual cannot be found on their WEB site. Maybe somebody in the forum can offer an alternative Manual (URL please) that is very similar and will give guide as to how a keyboard is replaced on a LapTop.

Regards,

Noel

Smile

Success at last.....

I took on the keyboard replacement task without the system manual, or indeed any other support material. I can report that after about two hours of careful manipulating, I finally achieved my goal. All is well....

Thank you (respondants) for your support.
