p3 chip to celeron mobo attempt...
p3 chip to celeron mobo attempt...
Wonder if there's anyone out there uing stuff as old as mine. Just got my olllld Amd k6 233 back from my ex-roommate. A little slow, but with windows 98, rock solid and consistent (the pc, not the roommmate). Put the harddrive into a box with a celeron 533. Inconsistent, freezes, and sometimes certain apps take a loooong time to respond when clicked on (Simple stuff like opening anything from the start bar like My documents...). Plus startup is a lot slower then the 233....Irritating. I have a bunch of other chips including a Celeron 366 (which appeared to work okay, but is the slowest and weakest of the bunch in theory), a celery 400 and a Pentium II 450 and a P3 550. I know the Celerons can fit into my 533 Mobo, but anyone think i'm taking a risk with putting the P3 550 in place of the Celery 533 without upgrading the fan/cooling system? Or should they be close enough that problems will be a minimum ( the celery 533's giving me such a headache, I almost miss my old AMD...) And I only do basic 'puting (websurf, email, wordprocessing, light digital photos and moderate mp3 stuff) so I don't need a screaming or even an entry level 1 plus gig system (besides, I got all the parts for free and it's kind of fun learning what kind of Frankensteinian result I can cobble up from all that....) Any useful advice from old pc tinkerers would be highly appreciated...I consider this whole project a learning experience...lol |
