usb do not work
basically i have done eveyrthing to the usbs like reinstalled uninstalled updated drivers had technicians from emachines look at them everything and they still do not recognize devices such as usb modems, printers, mp3s when they are plugged into a usb port the only thing i can come up with is perhaps its an interal problem and the usbs are dead i read that somewhere. also i had to delete a file called sunkfilt.sys a forum here informed me to do so because the copmuter wouldnt boot well that file i believe deals with usb and multimedia card reader. i no its not much info and kinda lackin of information but help would be great

Re: usb do not work
I need a little better understanding of some issues, so need to ask a few questions.
> Have the USB ports ever worked on this computer? If the answer is yes, then what has been changed to make them not work> > When you said you uninstalled, did you actually uninstall everything in that area and then reboot and let them find everything again? > When you go to Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager and scroll down to the USB area and open it with the + sign, are there any red or yellow marks down there indicating a problem? > Do you have an entry there someplace that has the word "enhanced" in it after you open the + sign as described above? > Have you entered the BIOS setup menu and enabled "all" the USB areas in the Bios setup menu? > Do you have SP2 set up on this computer? > Could you please list your specs so we know more about your motherboard. > If the USB worked previously, then can you do a "Restore" to the time (date) before it quit on you and get them to come up?

Re: usb do not work
probably about a month and a half ago
i will have to uninstall all usb its through emachines customer support about the usb 2.0 well thats not really a question but sounds likea good idea That is really most likely the issue you have. Most modern USB devices will not work unless you have USB 2.0 enabled in the bios and have the drives loaded. The majority of the time, that is the MAIN issue in cases like this, so we need to pay close attention to that feature. im about to check the bios it came loaded Field Value Motherboard Properties Motherboard ID 08/06/2004-nForce2-IGP-6A61BF0BC-00 Motherboard Name FIC K7M-NF18G (AU31) Front Side Bus Properties Bus Type DEC Alpha EV6 Bus Width 64-bit Real Clock 200 MHz (DDR) Effective Clock 400 MHz Bandwidth 3200 MB/s Memory Bus Properties Bus Type DDR SDRAM Bus Width 64-bit Real Clock 167 MHz (DDR) Effective Clock 333 MHz Bandwidth 2667 MB/s Chipset Bus Properties Bus Type HyperTransport v1.0 Bus Width 8-bit Motherboard Physical Info CPU Sockets/Slots 1 Socket 462 Expansion Slots 3 PCI, 1 AGP RAM Slots 2 DDR DIMM Integrated Devices Audio, Video, LAN Form Factor Micro ATX Motherboard Size 240 mm x 240 mm Motherboard Chipset nForce2-IGP Motherboard Manufacturer Company Name First International Computer, Inc. Re: usb do not work
> Make sure USB 2.0 is enabled in the Bios setup menu. (actually all USB items need to be enabled)
> You need to Uninstall all items and then reboot to see what happens. > We need to then select each and every item under the USB area (after we open it with the + sign) when we open it and right click and select Update Drivers for each item that is under that heading (if appropriate). > I also must assume you had USB 2.0 on there before it the items all worked previously before the modem was installed.

Re: usb do not work
When you boot up, try it several ways. Hold the del key down when it starts booting and don't let up until it enters the Bios setup menu. If that does not work, then try holding it down or tapping it different times as it begins to boot. It may take a few tries to get it to work. You do need to know that some motherboards enter the Bios setup menu with different keys.....try these I suggested and we will look at that issue further.

Re: usb do not work
Go to the USB items in the device manager and enter there with the + sign.
Right click on ALL items under the USB heading and select "Update Driver" for each and every one of them. Just be sure you go down the list and do ALL of them in there. Let it look for them and if you have Windows with SP2, it should automatically find all of the drivers right there on your computer. See what happens with that.

Re: usb do not work
http://www.usbman.com/
Being an emachine, the supply could have damaged certain components on the board. Check the caps for leakage or mis-shaped tops. The above is a helpful usb problem site.

Re: usb do not work
If you have a retail version of the operating system, you could try a repair install. That would most likely put anything back you deleted, but you would also have to reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers and SP2.

Re: usb do not work
What I would tell you might not be what you want to hear. However, I feel that we have an obligation to give you this information. Here is my opinion.
Most of the programs like the one you have listed do give outdated drivers (we all have some drivers that are outdated on our rigs and they work fine) where one has been updated, but that does not necessarilly mean that you will notice a difference in the operation or performance of your machine. The purpose of those programs is to find those and get you to BUY the program to get the updates. You can't update until you purchase with most of these programs. Then, you download the updates and have updated drivers but it may make no difference in your performance of those items. Therefore, I put no stock in that information one of those programs give you. That being said, if you know what drivers need updated, go the website of the product vendor and download those drivers that you know need updated for FREE. That is what most of us techs do. So, if it told you what drivers need updated, then use that information to go to the websites and do the updates. For me, FREE is where it is at.

Re: usb do not work
They may quite possibly be correct in the (I don't know this particular program, but do know others like it) fact that some drivers may be outdated. I just don't bother to always update unless there is a specific reason to do so for a personal choice.
I just wanted you to know that these drivers that are not the latest version may not work any better for you than the newer version that may have a specific reason for being updated. Therefore, it is quite possible the information they gave you is correct, but not helpful in every case. On the other hand, some may make a difference in total operation for you. Hope this helps.
