Hi. I'm having a problem with my comp. For some reason it keeps on shutting off randomly when I turn it on, sometimes I can load up the POST but other times it shuts off right away. I took everything apart after this problem started occurring. It worked for a little bit and I was able to reinstall the OS, but then when I turned it off and turned it back on the problem reoccurred. I also replaced the PS recently because it blew out but everything was working until now. I bought the PS about 4 months ago. I have no clue what to do and any help would be appriacted. Thanks
P.S the system specs. for my comp. are Pentium D 3.0 Ghz Video NVIDIA Gforce 7300 GS MOBO Nforce570SLIT-A V5.1 HDD seagate 750GB And two Kingston 1gb Ram logisys 550W LED Acrylic Power supply

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
When you took everthing apart did you remove the heatsink from the cpu?
If the answer is yes did you clean and replace the thermal paste? Is the heatsink tight? Enter bios and list here the cpu temp and voltages of the +3.3V, +5V and +12V. |

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
No, I didn't because when I bought my PS 4 months ago I also bought a heatsink and fan for my processor. I don't think that that's the problem because I just replaced it and put new thermal paste. I can't get into the bios because it keeps on shutting off before I can get in.

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
When a computer shuts down like that its usually 2 things, either,,,,,,,,,
the motherboard senses a cpu overheat condition and shuts down to prevent damage to the cpu or the power supply is faulty. Seeing as the psu is new I would clean and reapply the thermal paste following these instructions http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htm Also make sure the heatsink is tight |

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
Ok, so i bought new thermal paste and put it on the heatsink is tight but it still keeps shutting off. now I can sometimes get in to the BIOS it reads

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
Whats the cpu temp the bios is now reporting?
The next step would be to try another psu, the 12V is low, still within spec but barely. Can you barrow a psu to try? You could also go to a store like Best Buy or staples and purchase one then return it for a small restoking fee if it ain't the problem but if the bios reading is correct my bet is the psu is the problem. If the psu is only 4 months old it still should be under warranty |

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
I was thinking what if the computer PS is being overworked because it's only 550w and I think that I maxed out 550w and it says it has over voltage protection and I was wondering do you think maybe it could be shutting off because of that?

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
The specs you have listed would not max out a 550w but I am sure you have more hardware.
Put your specs in here then add 30% to the total. http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp I think that the psu is faulty its not the greatest. Heres a great artical on psu's http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...selection.html |

Re: Computer Shutting off randomly
Buying a cheap PSU seems a good idea at the time, but further down the line you relise you made a mistake.
I would look at The Antec Trio 550W Or you could get the Antec trio 650W. The Trio 650W would allow you to buy a 8600GT / GS or something further along the line, if you wish to upgrade your video card. |
