Mic Problems
Hey guys,
This is my first time posting regarding a mic problems so I really wasn't sure what information to provide so I figured I'd start with a basic description of the problem. My mic, although older than time itself, has worked fine until just the last few weeks. I've checked several times to ensure that it's plugged in to the proper port and have tried to test the recording hardware via the control panel but to no avail. Any thoughts as to what I can do? Or what tests I can run to supply you folks with more information? |

Re: Mic Problems
It's problem is it doesn't work? Where do I go to see what the make and model are of my mic? I'm running windows XP I believe. Sorry I'm not overly tech savvy so that's the best I can do for the moment :(

Re: Mic Problems
actorman: Try checking in Start>Run>type devmgmt.msc and Enter, for the microphone and right-click>properties to see its make/model, the current status and if there are any drivers installed for it, as well as for any conflicts.

Re: Mic Problems
Alrighty: So the device manager came up and to be perfectly honest I couldn't tell which of these is my microphone. I looked under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers (which made the most sense to me), and under System Devices, and under Ports (COM & LPT). Sorry I couldn't readily identify the mic... (sorry this is so difficult)

Re: Mic Problems
Hi actorman
List your system specs following this please: http://www.techsupportforum.com/558208-post1.html In Control Panel>Sounds & Audio devices check under Audio and Voice if your mic is detected, the volume and the Advanced settings. The info you provided is helpful, yes. Any information always helps.

Re: Mic Problems
Alrighty here's at least some specs :)
CPU BRAND: AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 2800+ CPU Speed: 1817 MHz OS: Windows XP5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2 Memory: Physical Total: 1,073,201,152 bytes (1024 MB) Physical Free: 620,765,184 bytes (593 MB) (and I don't know what's taking up that much ram since nothing else is open but anyways...) Page File Total: 1,774,657,536 bytes (1693 MB) Page File Free: 1,416,380,416 bytes (1351 MB) Virtual Total: 2,147,352,576 bytes (2048 MB) Virtual Free: 2,094,809,088 bytes (1998 MB) Pretty sure the RAM is DDR Harddrive: Quantum Fireballp AS40.0 Size: 41,107,701,760 Video Card: RADEON 9800 PRO AGP (0x4E48) Internal DAC(400MHz) 134217728 bytes (128 MB) Nothing (as far as I know) is overclocked. Sounds and Audio Devices Properties: it detects nvidia(r) nforce(tm) audio, then I click on test hardware it seems unable to detect my voice (if that makes any sense) I hope at least some of this helps... ?? |

Hi
Sorry, I was without a keyboard and been busy, so not been able to get back. Go to Start>Run>type: dxdiag and hit Enter. -Then under the "Sound" tab, see what is listed under Notes and click the Test DirectSound button, to see if all is successful. -Next under the "Music" tab, Test DirectMusic, see the notes for any information and conflicts, and make note of the music ports. -Under the "Input" tab, see if your device is listed there and any information that is given about it. In the same manner, check each tab. Click the "Save All Information" button at the bottom and attach the report back along with your next post using "Go Advanced>Manage Attachments". One more thing you missed from the specs - what's the motherboard? EVEREST will report it. See how all that goes.

Re: Mic Problems
Oh hey it's honestly no problemo that you've been busy... we're all adults leading adult lives which doens't always leave us all the time we'd like, I completely understand my friend.
The motherboard section on everest is empty? Which I know shouldn't be but.... The Direct Sound test went without a hitch. The same can be said for the Direct Music tests. I've attached the requested file |

Re: Mic Problems
Hi
Was your mic listed under the "Input" tab? There was a problem with the Input section. Something not mentioned clearly has registry errors. Problem: Quote:
Quote:
Microsoft DirectInput Microsoft DirectInputDevice Microsoft DirectInput8 Microsoft DirectInputDevice8 Those are driver files and maybe DLLs I'm thinking. Have XP CD and place it inside the drive and go to Start>Run>type: sfc /scannow and hit Enter. Retry to any prompts, reboot when it finishes and see how that goes.

Re: Mic Problems
under the inputs tab there were some components not listed by name (the mic could easily have been one of them). given that I've moved a number of times in the past year I honestly have no idea where my windows xp cd has disappeared to, do you have any other suggestions? :)

Re: Mic Problems
Well, the mic would've been under the Input section and it looks like those missing/corrupt DX files are what's giving you problems.
Try running the same set of commands without the CD and see how that goes. Once it gives you a prompt to "Retry Cancel etc", just close it. |

Re: Mic Problems
That usually is the better way round before a repair install -- which also involves an XP CD.
The other way is very messy and could make you end up with endless monitor and sound problems. It involves deleting DX9c and reinstalling it. Since those files are missing, I'll have a look around later on when I get access to an XP system at which files they could be. Maybe we can transpose them over. ![]() Still at work, so can't be of much help till around 6-7 hours later, my apologies . |

Hi
Try this: Download>Unzip the folder I'm attaching and there will be two files inside. Move those two files into C:\WINDOWS\system32\. Drop them inside that. Then restart your system and see if the microphone works. |

Re: Mic Problems
No such luck on that one my friend (although I must admit it seemed pretty ingenious to me). I wonder if at some point in the removal of the malicious software (see other threads posted by myself) that we accidentally removed the wrong files?

Re: Mic Problems
If the logs were correct, and they mentioned all the errors, then those two are the only files missing that you needed. So now that kinda stumps me as to how I can even find out where the error lies.
Your system registry stated those two files were missing. You mention malware cleaning, was the microphone working before that? Do something and be very careful a this concerns the registry, where a single error can mess your system up and stop it booting. ![]() Go to Start>Run>type: regedit and press Enter. Navigate to HKCR\CLSID\{25E609E4-B259-11CF-BFC7-444553540000}\ key. It'll be a long find. Try to expand it, and see what is underneath that key. Post a screenshot of what you find when that key is expanded. |
