USB hub power supply

Hey, there. I just bought a USB expander hub from Belkin. I didn't get an AC adapter with it, because I thought I already had one that would do the job. However, I come to find out that the adapter is rated at 4.5V, not 5V (which is what the hub is labeled for) as I thought it was. It does, however, fit comfortably.

My question is this: is it safe to use the 4.5 adapter with it? I've got my fingers crossed, as I got the hub for only $10, and I can't seem to find an adapter that doesn't cost the same or more than that.

Hi, and welcome to TSF!

I would not use it. Undervolting things is bad. You shouldn't need a separate power supply unless you have a lot of power hungry devices like hard disks devices hooked up, and even then a lot of hubs have two USB cables to provide extra power.
