PC crashing, particuarly in Word

First of all, I'm really not sure where this should go, so sorry if it's in the wrong place...

------------------------------

Hi, recently Microsoft Word has been causing my PC to crash. Within minutes of opening the program, my monitor suddenly goes into standby. The system appears to still be on as I can hear the fans etc. going.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, I even acquired a newer version of office and installed that instead, but for some reason the problem persists.

I also formatted the PC yesterday (not simply to try and solve this problem, though I hoped it would anyway) but still no luck.
In fact, since formatting, the system was extremely prone to crashing as described above, then restarting, but in any situation instead of just when using Word. This did happen occasionally before the format, but not often.
However, I seem to have fixed that by turning Hardware Acceleration all the way down (though I'd obviously rather not have to do this).
Anyway, even having done that, the problem persists in Word.

Does anyone have a clue what's going on?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you've reinstalled XP and the problem persists, I would suspect something wrong with your hardware. How old is your machine? Have you given it a spring clean lately. Make sure there is no dust in your machine and check all your connections. Also run a test of your memory using Memtest. If none of that works, post back together with your system specs.

Check your paths and backup docs for corrupt or illegal names/characters
