Brother MFC-8500 fax machine not recognized

A Friend Of Mine Has A Fax Machine Hooked Up To His Computer Through A Usb Cable. When You Plug The Cable In The Bubble On The Bottom Right Pops Up And Informs There Is New Hardware Connected (indicating It Is A Usb Driver, Not A Fax Machine). When I Try To Load The Software From The Disk, It Says The Fax Isn't Connected To The Computer, So I Can't Install The Software From The Disk.

Please Help If Possible! Thanks!

I installed a brother printer quite awhile ago. I'm fairly certain I had to install the software first (USB driver)

should i click on the bubble and install software for the USB and then try the Brother software? he has DSL internet and i believe this is why he would go through the USB? i'm usually good at this, this has confused me though. ive never had so much trouble w/ something!

I would say yes to installing the usb driver. Otherwise, the printer won't be recognized

You might want to have a look in your device manager; see if you can see the fax machine there somewhere [it has to be running at the time]. If the "bubble" appears when it's plugged in, there's gotta be something in the device manager.
